The Situation of Filipino Children and Young People Almost half of the population in the Philippines are children. With a fast population growth a year, the government has a difficult task in providing children with enough resources to ensure their rights. For many adults and children, a 15-year-old who bears a child willingly or unwillingly ceases to be a girl-child but a young mother. An 11-year-old who takes on the task of tilling the ï ¬ elds ceases to be a boy but a labouring farmhand. A 16-year-old who spends most of his time at a wage-factory ceases to be a young adolescent but a breadwinner. A 9-year-old girl made to peddle her body on the streets becomes a commodity. Their situation mirrors the realities of their families, community and society. While the Filipino family puts much premium on the welfare of its children, families are increasingly breaking down in the midst of the struggle for survival. In the process, children are inadvertently sacrificed. The paragraphs on the next pages are studies of the situation of Filipino children and young people. Poverty and Luck of Education If you have an education, you won’t go hungry and you live with comforts of a house. You are living a good life. There is Michelle 16 year olds. She lives in Payatas. Life is hard in a garbage town. At such young age children collect and sell garbage. Despite the danger they are forced to work. Many have had accidents and died. When typhoon Ketsana came, her house was destroyed. Her mom lost her job. With no house and no money for food, Michelle and her siblings could not go to school anymore. Twelve-year-old Marian is one of the millions of Filipino children whose education has taken a backseat due to poverty. The fifth of eight children, she fled her home when she was 10 because she said her jobless parents hurt her. The body has a natural response to immanent danger approaching. Often it undergoes a â€Å"flight-or-fight†, a physiological response to a harmful event or threat of survival. However, this reaction to danger can be damaged or altered due to Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). PTSD usually occurs after a terrifying event that involves physical harm, or the threat of it. Instead of the body having a natural response to danger, this â€Å"flight-or-fight† reaction could occur at any given, uncontrollable moment. Traumatic events including rape, child abuse, natural disasters, and car accidents are one of the many things that can trigger PTSD. Before being diagnosed with PTS D, there are a few symptoms to consider as well. PTSD can lead to a handful of symptoms. These symptoms categorize under, re-experiencing symptoms, avoidance symptoms, and hyper-arousal symptoms. Re-experiencing symptoms occur from things that remind a person of the traumatic event that happened and will affect one’s daily routine. These symptoms include flashbacks, bad dreams, and frightening thoughts. By having these symptoms occur, one would try to avoid performing daily routines if it reminds them of the traumatic event. Avoidance symptoms affect one’s personal routine. One would avoid everything that would remind them of the scenario that occurred. When Marlow arrives in Brussels he refers to the city as a whited sepulchre (page 37) a whited sepulchre implies death, and the phrase whited sepulchre was in the Bible by Jesus as he talks about the Pharisees and Sadducees being grand on the outside but completely the opposite on the inside, and this is what is said about Brussels which is something grand on the outside but something that contains horrors within. This makes the phrase appropriate for Brussels as what Marlow was going to Brussels for being the job down the Congo contained death and horrors, as we find out further on within the novel. This also links in with Imperialism as that contains horrors, which is shown through the job down the Congo. Marlows view of the cruel and often foolish consequences of the trade established by colonialism can be seen in his description of the activities in his journey down the African Coast, where he says that some of the soldiers drowned in the surf but nobody seemed to care, this shows his view as he says that the steamer must go on even though some soldiers may have died in the process of the journey, this there fore means the trade must goes on. Also when he says names that seemed to belong to some sordid farce acted in front of a sinister backcloth (page 41).
